I can see the tinted glasses from 20th-century Belgium, outshine the antique wooden structures. Pitched roofs draped in blood-reds and blues raise tiny golden sigils above them. Walking through the white-walled corridor, I reach a small gateway. Upon entering, I find a room that seems to encompass a thousand worlds, each narrating its own tale. Mesmerized, I place all my belongings on the wooden table and head towards the dusty shelf. The bookshelf filled with relics from various corners of the world stands alone in the room. Amidst tables adorning similar bronzed souvenirs and vintage contraptions, the bookshelf stands out as an anomaly. Just like the uncharted Chateau Garli to which it belongs.
As I dramatically declare my commitment to investigate the still life novels, I couldn't help but notice my friend's nonchalant reaction. She casually grabs her bag and with a dismissive tone, leaves for her assigned room. I turn back to the bookshelf, where I discover a treasure trove of ancient postcards and quirky notes from the past. Nestled among vintage classics like The Scarlet Pimpernel and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, I stumble upon unfamiliar works like The Kashmir Holocaust and the Complete Guide to Running a Business by John R. Klug - relics of a bygone era. Standing amidst the archive, a wave of melancholy washes over me. The abandoned books and their mysterious authors seem to mock my greatest dread: the horror of being forgotten.
I suppose there seems to be a common concern amongst humankind regarding their endeavors being overlooked or fading into obscurity entirely. The idea of my efforts amounting to nothing, lingers in my mind.
I pick up A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury, a book that delves into the butterfly effect—a concept that once used to puzzle me.
Chaos theory subtly suggests its presence in reality through the butterfly effect. The notion that a minuscule action by a tiny creature on Earth could potentially influence our lives is truly astounding. We might as well be just one flip of a coin away from creating two parallel universes with identical histories up to that point. All it takes is one decision, one coin toss. The significance of small things.
It has been mentioned that since the start, every event in time has been predetermined by its initial condition. For each specific initial state, a specific outcome is destined to occur. However, due to the infinitesimally small margin of error associated with the initial condition, it is impossible for us to predict the outcome with high precision (a slight change results in monumental consequences). A self-referential paradox.
What fascinates me about chaos is its coexistence with order. There is a certain level of harmony within chaos. The unpredictability of human lives could be seen as the universe being kind to us. Perhaps some things are meant to be beyond our control.
Chaos could construe the notion that a single misstep could lead to failure. However, the comfort in chaos is that it emphasizes the significance of even the smallest of our actions. Even if their influence seems minimal, they still matter in the grander scheme of things.
In essence, if the seemingly insignificant details hold importance, then they are not truly insignificant.
Noticing the lady at the small front desk, I grab the chance and ask,”Do you, perhaps, know anything about Chateau Garli’s past?”
Her eyes brighten, as though she had recounted the tale countless times. “Sir Mela Ram Sud built this place in the 1920s. He was a popular socialite and businessman during the British colonial era. These books and gadgets once belonged to him during the 1900s. His descendants opted to restore this property to safeguard their legacy.”
"This place was merely a 2-hour drive from my town. I’m surprised I didn’t know about it.”
“This gem remains relatively unknown, miss. Did you know the Dalai Lama has stayed here at some point?”
Perceiving the subtle irony in her words as she speaks, I gaze at the books I hold, knowing they will not be overlooked. Those destined to discover them, simply will. Chateau Garli embodies a culmination of priceless relics, reflecting the essence of our existence in all our endeavors.
